For example, a traditional operations role might emphasize campaign builds, data extraction, and reporting. 3. They define governance responsibilities. As AI agents take action, organizations must clarify who’s accountable for decisions made by automated systems, especially in regulated environments.
Rethinking Capability Frameworks with Agentic AI
The implications of agentic AI extend beyond individual roles; capability frameworks and career ladders require review as well.
In technology functions, software engineers may increasingly be evaluated on their ability to design AI-augmented architectures rather than write every line of code manually. In operations, managers may oversee networks of agents alongside human teams. With this in mind, leaders should consider whether their competency models include systems thinking, workflow design, and risk management in AI-enabled environments. If these capabilities are absent from formal role documentation, organizations risk under-investing in them.
How Tech Leaders Should Adjust Their Job Descriptions in the Agentic AI Age
Updating job descriptions isn’t an administrative exercise; it’s a vital piece of strategic signaling. When leaders explicitly reference AI-enabled workflows in role design, they communicate that human value lies in judgment, creativity, ethical oversight, and system optimization. When they don’t, they implicitly suggest that AI is peripheral rather than foundational.
The arrival of agentic AI isn’t going to render existing roles obsolete overnight, but it does – and will continue to - challenge assumptions about how work is decomposed, delegated, and evaluated.
